Building Access Statement

The City and County of Swansea established an Access Consultation Group, which represents various disability groups within Swansea, to specifically consider accessibility issues within the LC.

LC continues to hold regular meetings with the Access Consultation Group to discuss further improvements to the access to/ within the facilities.

Vehicle Parking & Outdoor Routes

The building is located adjacent to and has direct vehicle and pedestrian access from The Water Front Car Park on Oystermouth Road. Access from the car park is provided by a boulevard pedestrian footpath running alongside the South facing side of LC. Parking for disabled visitors to the LC is immediately adjacent to the building and also has a dedicated drop off point. Pay and display charging fees apply to blue badge holders.

Main Entrance/Reception

In addition to sets of manual double doors, an automatic powered entrance door has been located centrally and on a direct alignment to the main reception desk for clarity. The automatic doors are identified by a strip of distinguishable tactile paving and are provided with audio and visual indication. Lowered worktops have been provided at reception points for wheelchair access.

Multi-level access – Lifts

3 public lifts are provided for multi-level access throughout the building from ground up to third floor complete with mirror, audio and visual indication and call button and tactile signage.

Accessible Sanitary and Changing Accommodation Facilities

There are 6 wheelchair accessible shower, change and WC rooms all with emergency pull cords– two of which incorporate a wash-down bed and automatic lifting hoist. There are 3 wheelchair accessible WC rooms all with emergency pull cords, 5 wheelchair accessible shower areas, 11 ambulant changing cubicles and 3 accessible baby change facilities. Each sanitary facility has also got accessible wash-hand-basin arrangements.


Mixes of varying sized lockers are provided including accessible and wheelchair lockers to each facility around the building. The quantity of wheelchair specific accessible lockers provided is 39 throughout the changing areas. To further distinguish from standard lockers the locker door panel colour has been changed and the lockers have been positioned in small banks throughout the changing areas in relation to dedicated accessible changing areas and toilets.

Signage/induction loops

In addition to the main building direction signage (all have tactile directions incorporated), a series of wheelchair accessible ‘tactile wayfinder’ floor plans are provided identifying clearly visually and through touch, the location of lifts, toilets and main facilities of the building.

Audio frequency Induction Loop Systems for the hard of hearing are provided at the reception desk, all eateries, public counters and within the multi-purpose sports hall and fitness studios.

Waterpark Access

Wheelchairs are permitted on poolside after disinfection but are not able to enter the water. LC provides wheelchairs that are able to enter the water. Full wheelchair access is available to most areas on the waterpark, including direct access into the main wave pool, interactive pool and toddler’s pool.

Lagoon Pool

The Lagoon Pool has a portable transfer hoist for easy access to both the pool and the stepped seats. Transfer can be made from the individual’s wheelchair with the assistance of a member of staff.

Bubble Pool

The Bubble Pool has a portable transfer hoist for easy access. Transfer can be made from the individual’s wheelchair with the assistance of a member of staff.

Wave Pool

The Wave Pool is wheelchair accessible and the operation of the wave machine is signalled by both an audio track and flashing light beacons.

Play Access

Play offers sensory play; audio/visual interactive play and physical play. There are no specific access restrictions within Play however there are no lifts/hoists to the upper levels of the structure.

Climbing Wall Access

Should a wheelchair user wish to use the climbing wall, there are no hoist or lifts to the base of the wall however this should not impede those wishing to use the facility.

Fitness Centre & Spa Access

All gym users have to undertake an induction prior to use of any of the equipment and this is advised to all users by staff at the time of their induction. Specific equipment is available for use according to ability and an assessment will be undertaken as part of the induction process. All LC staff are trained to provide advice on the correct, appropriate and safe use of the equipment.

Health Spa

Full Wheelchair access is provided to the Steam room, Sauna, Aromatherapy room and shower & tiled heated seat facilities. A portable transfer hoist is provided for the Spa pool for wheelchair users. Transfer can be made from the individual’s wheelchair with the assistance of a member of staff or carer.

It is possible to provide wheelchair access to the therapy rooms (Automatic adjustable chair/beds are provided). If specific Disabled or wheelchair Accessible therapy is required, this can be carried out in the accessible changing and shower room which has a dedicated adjustable bed and hoist facility, located adjacent to the Health Spa.

Carer Access

There is no charge for carers who accompany disabled users for the purpose of assistance in any of our activities.

Queue Fast Track

There is a fast track system in place at the LC for when a queue develops. Anyone who is unable to queue can go immediately to the right hand side of reception for faster access.
